Muhammad Ali, an American professional boxer and activist, is widely recognized as one of the most influential sports figures (and public figures) of the 20th century. With the nickname "The Greatest," he is hailed as the greatest heavyweight boxer of all time. He held the prestigious titles of WBA and Ring magazine heavyweight champion while also becoming the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world on three separate occasions. In recognition of his remarkable achievements, he was honored as the Sportsman of the Century by Sports Illustrated and the Sports Personality of the Century by the BBC.
Throughout his career, Ali engaged in several historic boxing matches that captivated the public's attention. Notable among these were his highly publicized fights with Sonny Liston, Joe Frazier (including the "Fight of the Century" and the "Thrilla in Manila"), and his legendary bout with George Foreman in the "Rumble in the Jungle." Ali thrived in the spotlight and became renowned for his provocative and flamboyant persona; famous for his trash-talking his opponents through freestyled rhyme schemes and spoken word poetry.
Beyond his accomplishments in the ring, Ali's actions as a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War elevated him to the status of an icon for the counterculture movement of the 1960s. His refusal to be drafted into the military during the Vietnam War, citing his religious beliefs and opposition to the war, led to his conviction for draft evasion among other legal challenges, and he was stripped of his boxing titles and banned from the sport during the prime years of his boxing career. He also served as a prominent symbol of racial pride for the Black community during the civil rights movement and throughout his career. After retiring from boxing, he shifted his focus to religion, philanthropy, and activism; leaving an indelible mark on society.
Muhammad Ali is remembered not only for his athletic prowess but also for his charisma, poetry, and his stand on civil rights and social justice issues. He remains an iconic figure in the history of boxing and an inspiration to many inside and outside the sport.
